Landmark donation to Cambrian College. In the largest single donation in Cambrian College's history, The Joyce Foundation has provided $2 million to fund a new bursary for students in financial need. Beginning in fall 2016, The Joyce Foundation Access Bursary will be awarded to help such students to pay for tuition and books. Preference goes to students from Northern Ontario.

New bursary fund at Saint Mary’s University. The Joyce Foundation also donated $2 million to Saint Mary’s University to create The Joyce Foundation Bursaries Fund, which will support Nova Scotia students with demonstrated financial need. A significant portion of the gift will be designated for students attending the Fred Smithers Centre of Support for Students with Disabilities.

A gift to reduce invasive procedures on animals. The University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College received a $1 million gift  that will be used to create the Lindy Barrow Minimally Invasive Procedures Suite. The unit will include state-of-the-art technology that helps avoid major veterinary surgery. Linda Barrow made this leadership gift to the $9-million fundraising campaign launched in fall 2015 through the OVC Pet Trust.

The ever-popular year in review. Readers of Academica Top Ten (January 4, 2016 issue), EdTech Magazine (with a focus on the biggest higher-education technology stories of 2015) and the Toronto Star (top moments of kindness in the news) can walk back through highlights, scandals and trends from the past year. But many prefer to turn the page to trends ahead. What’s your forecast?

Delete these hackneyed items from your lexicon. Start your new year with a smile and a delete button. Lake Superior State University has released its annual list of words and phrases that should henceforth be banned from the English language.
