Simon Fraser U celebrates landmark campaign results. To cap its 50th-anniversary celebration, Simon Fraser University announced on September 21, 2016 that it raised a record-breaking $275 million through the SFU Power of Engagement fundraising campaign, well surpassing its $250 million goal. Of 18,534 committed donors, 67% are SFU alumni.

Too much ado about rankings? Canadian hand-wringing followed the The Times Higher Education 2016-17 World University Rankings which saw Canada’s perennial top three performers ranked lower this year (while six of the 25 Canadian universities that were ranked in 2015-16 improved). Asia’s top three universities, meanwhile, were all up. THE Editor Phil Baty remarked: “Canada will have to watch out for Asia’s continuing ascent.”

But Canadian higher-ed blogger Alex Usher disagreed on international rankings’ significance in his assessment of the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities, QS Rankings and THE Rankings. He commented: “Do any of these changes mean anything? No. Not a damn thing. Most year-to-year changes in these rankings are statistical noise . . . .”

PSE indigenizes. University Affairs explores the academic, cultural and communications aspects of the growing wave of indigenization across Canada’s PSE campuses. Several of the quoted experts (Blaine Favel, Chancellor of University of Saskatchewan; Vianne Timmons, University of Regina President; and University of Saskatchewan President, Peter Stoicheff) participated in the 2016 CCAE National Conference in Saskatoon.

Canadian tax incentives encourage donations. “Canada has the most generous tax incentives for charitable giving in the world, but their nature and extent are largely unknown to Canadians,” says The Philanthropist. The article provides a clear review of “the Canadian advantage” in tax credits that can be incentives to charitable donations - excellent info for all Canadian fundraisers.

Branding through live, documentary-style interaction. Jay Baer blogs on Medium about the need to transition branding stories from fiction to fact, especially in speaking to Millennials (and younger) - and the importance of using live media to make the switch authentic. Food for thought, marketing and branding experts.

Giving Days = Great Engagement Opportunities

CCAeLearning series Presenting Partner:

Industrial Alliance

CCAE Professional Development offers the learning and networking you need to advance in your work and your career.

Giving Tuesday is just one example of the “one-day wonders” that offer excellent opportunities not only to raise funds, but especially to engage with campus constituents and supporters. Participants in A Fresh Take on Giving Days - the CCAeLearning webinar on September 22, 2016 (FREE to all CCAE members) took away top tips to maximize the value of their school’s own giving days, including:

  • Know your audience - their communications preferences, information needs, attitudes, opinions and motivations.
  • Choose your engagement and fundraising goals strategically, and match these to key metrics: # of messages pushed, likes, favourites, link clicks; plus participation rate, donation amount / percentage, and dollar average by demographic.
  • Mix social media and in-person appeals - for example, post a banner and donation table outside the food court.
  • Create a unique and meaningful hashtag - like University of Regina’s #unselfie (volunteers took a selfie featuring a message about giving, to upload to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
  • Capture and re-purpose testimonials - such as (from #UAlbertaLove): “I went to the University of Alberta for a Science degree and left with a lifetime partner.”
  • Understand that a growing percentage of alumni are now digital natives.

Check out the full roster of CCAeLearning webinars and register now for the entire series. All CCAeLearning is presented by 2016 Prix d’Excellence recipients.

Next session: Is Print Dead? Not if You Ask Us - October 28, 2016, 1 - 2 p.m. Eastern.
