Manulife Financial Outstanding Achievement Award - 2007

Dr. Terry Flannigan

University of British Columbia, Okanagan

Dr. Terry Flannigan’s extraordinary career in advancement spans 50 years. He has been recognized as a pioneer, champion, and mentor in the field of educational advancement, raising over $300 million for post-secondary institutions in Western Canada and inspiring a generation of new advancement professionals.

Terry’s career began in 1957 with the Saskatchewan Department of Education and the Saskatoon City Park Collegiate as an instructor. After receiving his Ph.D. in Educational Administration and working as an Associate Professor at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, Terry joined Alberta’s Grant MacEwan Community College in 1972. Through Terry’s leadership, GMCC was one of the first colleges in Canada to establish a foundation with the sole mandate of advancing the institution’s growth through philanthropy, raising an unprecedented $15 million over 10 years.

Terry’s track record in fundraising is impressive. He completed a $4 million capital campaign for Okanagan University College in Kelowna, BC; surpassed a $145 million target for The University of Alberta’s first comprehensive campaign; and conducted Northern Alberta Institute of Technology’s first campaign of $14 million. During each campaign, Terry’s leadership has been a catalyst driving pride and community involvement with the institution.

Terry’s most impressive contributions to advancement are the successes of those professionals he has mentored. No one has ever worked “for” him – staff always work “with” him. Advancement professionals who have worked with Terry have gone on to roles as Vice Presidents and Presidential Advisors, leading their own multi-million-dollar campaigns at post-secondary institutions across the country.

In 2004, the University of British Columbia established a new campus in BC’s Okanagan Valley. UBC President Dr. Martha Piper called on Terry to come out of retirement (again) to create a new Development team for the Kelowna campus. Within the first two years, Terry had built a team of nine professional staff, including two former colleagues who moved from Alberta in order to work with him. Before UBC Okanagan even officially opened its doors, Terry had the senior management staff and 100% of his Development team financially contributing to the institution. His philanthropic attitude is infectious.

Terry is also a tireless volunteer. He is a long-standing supporter of the United Way, and Chair of the 2007 Heart of Gold Gala in support of the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation.

Dr. Terry Flannigan’s contributions to educational advancement cannot be overstated. And at age 73, he is still leading, mentoring, and giving back to his community. CCAE and Manulife Financial are truly proud to recognize Terry with an honour he richly deserves: The 2007 Manulife Financial Outstanding Achievement Award.
