In 1996, with the proceeds from the sale of Creditel, he established the Canadian Credit Management Foundation, with the purpose of funding innovative new programs at Canadian post-secondary schools. Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law, and a $1 million donation to le Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface.
Much more philanthropic support has followed – a total of $41 million to the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto which is now includes the Marcel A. Desautels Centre for Integrative Thinking; $33 million to McGill University which resulted in the naming of the Desautels Faculty of Management and the Marcel Desautels Centre for Integrated Management at McGill; and $20 million to the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Music which also now carries his name.
Through the Foundation that he established Dr. Desautels has contributed over $110 million to CCAE member schools in Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. In 2000 he received the prestigious Arbor Award for his voluntary service to the University of Toronto and in 2008 he was admitted as a member of the Order of Canada in the category of Philanthropy-Education.
