The 2013 Rising Star is:
Alumni Officer, Faculty of Dentistry, Dalhousie University
After less than three years in his position as Alumni Officer in Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Dentistry, Jon Bruhm has been credited with building the engagement of Dentistry alumni, planning and running one of Dalhousie’s most successful alumni events, and serving as a trusted adviser to Dentistry students.
The accolades he has received from the Dean and Dentistry professors, as well as advancement staff, have earned Jon Bruhm a CCAE Rising Star Award as a promising early-career advancement professional.
Jon took on his role at Dalhousie in July 2010, after two years as an Alumni Officer at Saint Mary’s University. He hit the ground running at Dal to spearhead the planning of the May 2012 Centennial Celebrations for the Faculty of Dentistry. Although Dentistry is the university’s second-smallest Faculty, the Centennial Celebrations attracted an extraordinary 26% of Dentistry alumni to 34 events and activities, including a golf tournament, reception, celebratory dinner, continuing education courses, and much more.
In addition to the milestone Centennial Celebrations, Jon Bruhm has guided the Faculty of Dentistry in hosting more than 60 alumni events all across Canada and at selected international venues. Employing Dal’s External Relations model of “Inform, Involve, Invest”, Jon has revitalized the Faculty’s major communications avenues, developed social initiatives to build morale, and assisted student groups in executing and improving their annual events.
As Assistant Professor of Dentistry, Dr. John S. Christie, D.D.S., said about Jon: “His knowledge, skills and enthusiasm made an immediate and dramatically positive impact. From day one he was a major driving force in all aspects of our alumni activities.” Dr. Christie noted that Jon’s trademark is “maximum effort and optimal outcome”.
