The Opportunity

Lakeridge Health Foundation is recruiting a dynamic and driven fundraising leader in the role of Director of Development and Campaigns. The Director will lead the team responsible for developing and executing the Foundation’s relationship-based fundraising programs including major gifts and campaigns, planned giving, signature and third party event programs.

Reporting to the Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer and serving as part of the senior leadership team, the new Director will assist the CEO with overall planning for the Foundation. The Director of Development and Campaigns will manage a personal portfolio of individual and corporate donors and partner with the Foundation board, development committee, and other senior leaders to engage new prospects and steward long term relationships.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a substantial role in the oversight and planning for the upcoming comprehensive campaign focused on cancer care, currently in its quiet phase, and significant campaigns in the future.

Lakeridge Health Foundation supports the Oshawa and Whitby sites of Lakeridge Health, one of Ontario’s largest community hospitals with five sites in Durham Region.

Cancer Campaign

Lakeridge Health is home to one of the top cancer centres in Ontario. As such, the Foundation is embarking on a $20 million campaign to fund priorities that will significantly improve the treatment and experience of patients with cancer throughout Lakeridge Health.

Top quality cancer care requires the expertise of a multi-disciplinary staff and a number of programs throughout our Hospital. To ensure all facets of the cancer journey are impacted by our campaign, our priorities will be comprehensive and indicative of every team involved in a patient’s experience.

The Cancer Campaign will launch publicly in 2020.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is an experienced major gift and campaign fundraiser with a history of success closing significant gifts and cultivating long term relationships with donors and partners. Highly motivated and proactive, the Director of Development and Campaigns will be the driving force of the Cancer Campaign as it moves into its public phase later this year.

An experienced leader and builder with strong business acumen, the successful candidate will be a collaborative team player working closely with the CEO and senior leadership team, contributing to the strategies and direction for the Foundation’s annual and long range plans.  As an advocate for philanthropy who is excited by innovation, the Director will promote the exploration of new fundraising opportunities and ideas.

A strong, charismatic leader who can motivate and inspire, the successful candidate will focus a team of dedicated fundraisers through mentorship, coaching and professional development.

The Director of Development and Campaigns will lead with trust and create an inclusive environment engaging their team in planning and decisions. The new incumbent will value the diverse experiences of the development team members and optimize, nurture and foster their talents. With strong, regular communications and collaboration, the ideal candidate will provide direction and clarity around goals and expectations, elevating a successful, dedicated, and high performing team.

Intelligent, professional, and well-spoken, the new Director will be comfortable presenting to and engaging with the board of directors and campaign cabinet. A strong volunteer manager, the ideal candidate will be the key staff liaison for the development committee providing support and fostering relationships and dialogue that are generative and invites the creativity of others.

The successful candidate will have the ability to recognize and build connections throughout Oshawa and Whitby to expand the Foundation’s networks. A competent and compelling spokesperson for the hospital and its impact, the new incumbent will engage the business community and broaden the strong, positive, existing relationships. The Director will be passionate about healthcare and motivated by seeing the meaningful work of the hospital while celebrating the dedicated Lakeridge Health donors.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

·         Work with the CEO in the strategic development and execution of a robust major giving program.

·         Develop and execute annual operational plans and tactics for major and planned giving, signature events and community initiatives.

·         Provide leadership on Campaign planning and direction on its implementation.

·         Manage a personal portfolio of key major donor and partner relationships including individuals, corporations, and foundations.

·         Lead the team in building and managing a robust major gift pipeline.

·         Provide leadership to a team of four development staff, motivating them to achieve individual and team targets and provide opportunities for growth.

·         Conduct annual goal setting and performance management for direct reports.

·         Work with the marketing/communications team to develop a seamless transition of donors through moves management and between programs.

·         Manage volunteers to leverage relationships and support for the foundation in the community.

·         Oversight and direction of the Foundation’s sponsorship and small business programs.

·         Participate as a member of the Foundation’s senior leadership team.

Qualifications & Competencies

·         Progressive experience managing fundraising programs and teams and engaging with major donors, ideally in a health foundation or post-secondary institution.

·         Proven track record in planning, designing and implementing successful fund development strategies and programs including: Major Gifts & Campaigns, Sponsorships, Gift Planning and Events.

·         Demonstrated success identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors at the six figure level and above.

·         Experience managing, coaching, supporting, and collaborating with senior level volunteers.

·         Senior level experience in decision making, human relations, relationship management skills and experience leading a results-driven team.

·         Strong business acumen with financial management experience, including budget oversight.

·         Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills with experience developing communications plans.

·         Strong organizational and time management skills.

·         Knowledge of Canada Revenue Agency regulations for charitable donations.

·         High level of professionalism and drive.

·         Solid knowledge of relational databases. Experience with Raiser’s Edge is considered an asset.

·         Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education and experience.

·         CFRE designation is considered an asset.
