Development for Deans with Lorna Somers

November 18, 19, 20 & 25

Supported by

For over a decade, CCAE has been working with Lorna Somers to deliver programming built to inspire collaboration and grow philanthropy within Institutions. Success in securing significant philanthropic support requires an institution-wide effort and commitment. Academic leadership in partnership with faculty, staff and advancement colleagues, need to work together to improve prosperity and progress in all stages of giving.

Each year, CCAE’s Development for Deans sells out to capacity, leaving many unable to participate. This year, CCAE and Lorna are excited to bring the program to the digital space. The same great content, broken out into manageable timeframes with increased attendance capacity.

Part 1 and Part 2 will cover the following topics over 2 days (November 18 &19):

(It’s More Than…) Pop Up Philanthropy
An introduction to philanthropy and the current impact it is making globally. An environmental scan will alert us to key trends that will likely impact how we best engage with our supporters. And you can’t have a POP UP session without a POP UP quiz to start the discussion!

Running With Scissors
Whether a new academic leader or a seasoned, senior university administrator, you are part of your institutions ‘Village’ and there is a role for you to play in building reputation, resources and connections. What might be expected of you and how do you equip yourself for success? If our work was simply about securing gifts, it would be called “fundraising” and not “development”. Development, in harness with Advancement and University colleagues, considers all the activity and choreography leading to the opportunity to invite a gift and then everything that follows!

The Power Of Engagement In A Snapchat World
To best connect to and build relationships with our myriad supporters and their networks, we must understand what motivates philanthropy and what is required to ignite the spark. Equally important is how we nurture the relationship post-gift as we recognize and steward our donors and their gifts.

Rock, Paper, Scissors
Let’s leave nothing to chance. While there is ample opportunity for creativity and originality, there are processes and steps that lead to success. We’ll consider what it takes to successfully position an invitation for support.

Galaxy Quest
It’s all for nought if we don’t have aspirations and a plan. What are your next steps? What else is required to ensure success?

Topics related to themes A-D are the following:

The Faculty-Funder Partnership On The Engagement Journey
To build truly meaningful and reciprocal relationships that can add value in so many ways beyond just a cheque, your involvement in the Engagement Journey is critical. We’ll discuss what that entails and what the objectives of each phase of relationship-building is and how what we did in the past, no longer does the job. While it involves wider participation, more bespoke engagement and creative stewardship, the data show the investment of time and energy pays tremendous dividends for everyone.

Keys To A Successful Prospect Visit
While we will have touched on aspects of preparing for a face-to-face or screen-to-screen visit in our opening plenaries, let’s go into greater detail of how to position for a successful meeting that consistently advances your relationships and understanding of what is possible. We’ll talk about building our confidence and comfort so that these engagements become your favourite part of Development.

Potpourri for $1,000, Alex
We’ll spend our hour together diving more deeply into topics we will have only touched on in previous sessions. While I have suggested floor, it’s an open and anything goes. As a starting point, I’ve prepared a few slides addressing the following:

  • Ethics/Schmethics
  • Gift Planning
  • Advisory Committees
  • Engaging your Village
  • The Development Plan
  • Potpourri
