Canadian education celebrates convocation season. A commonly-expressed sentiment among Canadian educational advancement posts on social media in mid-June was: “This is why we do what we do.” Graduates trooped by the hundreds of thousands across the stages of independent schools, colleges, polytechnics, cegeps and universities from late May well into June, a happy culmination to the 2015-16 academic year.

Programs of choice drive first-year university students’ school selection. According to a recent study by The Canadian University Survey Consortium, the top three factors in a first-year student’s choice of a particular Canadian university are: (1) the university offers the program the student wants to take (33%); (2) the student wants to live close to home (16%); and (3) the chosen program has a work-experience component (12%). 15,000 students across Canada were surveyed for the report.

He said: "The engines are revving again, and the University of British Columbia will continue to move from excellence to eminence, I have absolutely no doubt."

Canada does it best. Alex Usher, a sometime critic of Canadian educational institutions and systems, lauds Canada as tops at experiential and work-integrated learning in his column of June 15, 2016. According to Usher, Canada has a “strong culture of work-oriented higher education which is matched by few other countries” and “arguably the best-funded and most successful non-university post-secondary education system in the world” - at colleges and polytechnics.
