A great bonus to attending is the chance to hear from a major philanthropist, public servant & business leader. Over lunch, Lynton R. (Red) Wilson, O.C., will speak candidly about his motivations and experiences as a leading volunteer and donor. Dr. Wilson is Chairman, The Wilson Foundation, Past Chancellor of the Canadian Business Hall of Fame and Chancellor Emeritus, McMaster University.  He was honoured this summer as CCAE's 2017 Friend of Education for his extraordinary leadership and philanthropy.

Opening group conversation: Truths and myths

Philanthropy advances an institution when it enables Vision and Mission. It also has the ability to ignite bold thinking and to realize initiatives that would not otherwise be possible. 

If we aspire to create a culture of philanthropy on campus and within our Faculties, and if securing support through philanthropic giving is that easy, why isn’t everyone doing it?

We’ll consider the top myths surrounding fundraising and the Academy and the truths around successfully establishing and nurturing a culture of philanthropy that will attract supporters and charitable gifts.


Setting the stage: Alumni engagement

Alumni are key constituents to engage, and harnessing their affinity with alma mater is a multi-stage, evolving process. We’ll look at what meaningful alumni engagement looks like and requires, and how it can be effectively aligned with your fundraising strategy.


The development journey & today’s informed donors

What is the catalyst for an individual making a personally significant gift, and how can we authentically develop relationships that get us to a conversation about giving? How can we better understand motivation and align it with our priorities? What does the engagement journey (development cycle) look like, and what is your role throughout that journey?

A key ingredient in fostering a culture of philanthropy in your Faculty is getting more than just than senior academic leadership and the Advancement team involved and engaged with alumni and supporters. What are specific roles and realistic expectations? What do successful academic/advancement partnerships look like? How are “big ideas” generated and what are donors telling us, through recent transformational gifts, about what motivates them to give…and give big? Hear from a donor who will candidly share their motivation and expectations in making a significant charitable gift.

More than ever, a case for support needs to tell a story, share a vision and inspire. How do you craft your case and become more fluent and compelling in telling the institutional story? Your Faculty story? How does the story become the basis of a successful invitation to financial support?
