"What does this data mean?": Building a data culture in advancement services

Having data means we can make better decisions, right? Not necessarily. Having data is only one piece of a bigger puzzle. To take advantage of data, we need to build a culture that ensures data is not only available, but also understood, appreciated and used.

Building a data culture requires collaboration and partnerships across functional groups. To ensure continued adoption, we need to continue providing the right data, at the right time, in the right format, to the right audience.

This presentation will look at UBC DAE's (ongoing) journey to building its data culture and offer a glimpse of lessons learned through demos and case studies.

Preparing your Institution for Engagement Scoring and Similar Data Projects

In this session you will find out more about engagement scoring and how you are able to support the team in undertaking this type of project. Forward-thinking institutions are adopting engagement scoring models to help with decision-making and it’s important for advancement services to be involved in and lead these conversations. We’ll cover how to have a seat at the table and how to help move the conversation forward, keeping data at the forefront. Leave this session with a better understanding of what questions to ask and what to consider in an effort to better capture information on constituent engagement.

Uniquely Qualified: Using Prospect Management with Volunteers and Volunteer Fundraisers

Volunteers are the lifeblood of successful fundraising. But they are often seen as sitting outside of the traditional parameters of Prospect Management. In this session, you will see a couple of case studies about how to incorporate both volunteer management into prospect management (i.e. managing the relationship cycle with a volunteer) and how to incorporate volunteer solicitors into prospect management (i.e. how to track and report on asks and engagement being made by volunteers on behalf of your organization).

Sticky Gifts: How to Navigate Challenging Gifts in a Donor Centric World
Davida Stafford - Senior Advancement Analyst, McMaster University

This session, based on real life examples, will provide an overview of how we addressed and resolved “sticky” gift situations this past year. The session will cover the trouble-shooting process, collaborating with the University Advancement team, gift acceptance policies, Canada Revenue Agency requirements, consulting other departments and allied professionals and how we document the decision for future reference - all within the framework of being committed to a donor centric approach.

  • Learn approaches that you can apply to your decision-making/trouble-shooting process to help achieve the best outcome.
  • Review specific challenges and opportunities related to accepting different types of gifts such as gifts-in-kind, student awards and estates.
  • The importance of consistency in approach and documenting the outcome for future reference as part of ensuring an outstanding donor experience.
