Inter-institutional Collaboration in Higher Education: Is it even possible?
Jack Rice, Executive Director, The Maple League of Universities

Higher Education’s collegial atmosphere is often tested by a system that places departments within institutions in a fierce struggle for scarce resources. Add to this equation the increasing competition for students, grants and donors and the rivalry amongst institutions becomes palpable. Ten years ago, four prominent east coast universities decided to form a consortium, to see if they could find ways to be better together. This presentation will check in on the progress of the Maple League experiment, it’s successes and missteps, in hopes of understanding how collaboration may used as a springboard for systems change.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the systemic nature of higher education, and how it’s approaches and results have converged over time.
  • Analyze the factors affecting the higher education sector and how they will continue to shape the existing system.
  • Describe the Maple League of Universities consortium, discussing the purpose behind its signature initiatives.
  • Understand the critical role of Advancement of supporting individual institutions and the sector, as we address the continually evolving landscape of education.
