Lorna Somers and Andrea Morris are back again this Fall 2023, and are coming to Toronto. Get your deans, academics and staff ready for the one and only Canadian advancement bootcamp!

CCAE has been working with Lorna Somers for over a decade to deliver programming built to inspire collaboration and grow philanthropy within Institutions. Success in securing significant philanthropic support requires an institution-wide effort and commitment. Academic leadership in partnership with faculty, staff and advancement colleagues, need to work together to improve prosperity and progress in all stages of giving.

Biography
Lorna Somers is recognized internationally as a teacher/facilitator for her speaking, writing, and workshops on philanthropy.  With a focus on Higher Education, having been an accomplished practitioner for 35 years in Development at McMaster University, Ontario, she has also worked in the educational and cultural sectors internationally and lead programmes at over 60 university, college and school campuses in countries as diverse as Australia, Lebanon, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Mexico and Japan.

As a happy consequence of a long career in fundraising, Somers has had the opportunity to lead in the design and operationalization over eight comprehensive and targeted campaigns, as well as foundational programmes like Annual Giving, Major & Principal Giving, Planned Giving. and Recognition & Stewardship.  Her own fundraising includes working with academic partners to confirm some of the largest philanthropic gifts in Canadian history.

She and Dr. Frank Minton have written the definitive Canadian text on fundraising, Planned Giving for Canadians, and Somers has been recognized for her leadership and service with a number of international and national awards from organizations that include CASE (Council for the Advancement & Support of Education) and CAGP (Canadian Association of Gift Planners).

In addition to speaking on philanthropy and fundraising, Somers is a sought after speaker and coach on business, social, and dining etiquette.

Andrea Morris

Biography
Andrea joined the University in 2015 to lead Energize: The Campaign for Eyes High, a $1.4B initiative which closed successfully in 2020 as the third largest fundraising campaign in Canadian history. Her team is responsible for building and stewarding relationships with donors and stakeholders to support the student experience, advance research and enhance community connections.

Andrea serves on the board of Innovate Calgary and is a leader in the university innovation ecosystem. In 2020, she founded UCeed, a philanthropy supported venture investment program, which has grown to five funds and more than $20M of assets under management.

Prior to 2015, she spent 15 years in progressively responsible roles in development and alumni relations at the University of Alberta. She led the expansion of the University’s presence in Calgary and was instrumental in the success of its $600M centenary Campaign. She began her career at her alma mater, the University of Ottawa.

Andrea was recognized with the 2022 Outstanding Achievement Award by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education.

Morning Sessions

PILLARS OF SUCCESSFUL PHILANTHROPY:  Creativity, understanding our donors, building a culture of and fluency in philanthropy. Everyone is a supporter and needs to understand the institutional story, be able to tell that story quickly, and understand what donors really want.

YOUR ROLE AS AN ADVANCEMENT ACADEMIC: Know your role and the role of your development partner as part of this philanthropic village. Understand the importance of an Advancement business and operating plan and how to utilize these components through metrics for yourself, your faculty and your Development Officers. Learn what to expect, what pitfalls to avoid and if things go south, how to recover and maintain momentum.

UNDERSTANDING THE ENGAGEMENT CYCLE AND YOUR ROLE IN ITTHE ART OF THE ASK: Learn how to navigate the donor engagement cycle and what key areas are necessary for successful engagement. Recognition and stewardship are imperative in the cycle – Big Gifts follow Big Ideas and Big Expectations – you must deliver!

FINDING YOUR SUPPORTERS: It’s time to get personal, to understand your donors you need to find innovative ways to identify your best donors and if they qualify for the gift you are seeking. Building a pipeline of all prospects is integral to success for the long game.

CLUE GAME: In this interactive activity participants will start sleuthing out how best to tackle the game of philanthropy. Everyone is a team player, let’s put our knowledge into action!

Afternoon Sessions

BIG IDEAS, BIG STRATEGIES, BIG ASKS: Step up to the plate and find the solutions and strategies everyone needs to use big ideas to gain big donations.

ROLE PLAY WITH THE ANATOMY OF THE ASK: Back to another interactive activity where participants will learn the anatomy of the ask, and then the spotlight will be on you to understand and make that pitch.

POTPOURRI: A summary of everything and other key facets such as ethics, volunteers, advisory boards, campaigns, cases for support, key policies and more!

KEYS TO SUCCESS: Straight from the Dream Team’s incredible minds, participants will learn the downright necessary components to turning an idea into a successful endeavour.

Full participation in Development for Deans – Toronto is applicable for 7.25 points in Category 1.B -Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.

Registration packages are applicable only for the event to which it was purchased. All registrations are individual purchases and cannot be shared. Please note that in the event of a forced cancellation as mandated by Federal or Provincial Government, CCAE reserves the right to cancel the event and all registrations will be subject to one of the cancellation options below. CCAE recognizes and will adhere to all guidelines put forth by public health both locally and provincially. To ensure a safe event for all, at the time of the event should you experience symptoms of COVID-19, or have been in contact with a confirmed case, or have been instructed to isolate for any reason by public health you will not be allowed to attend. If an event has to be cancelled or re-scheduled, CCAE will contact you as soon as possible to notify you of the change. CCAE is not responsible for any travel or accommodation expenses incurred in relation to in-person registrations. Individual cancellation options for extenuating circumstances: Should an individual be unable to attend due to items related to extenuating circumstances (illness, decease, departure from position, retirement etc.): Notice of all cancellations must be received in writing to admin@ccaecanada.org, 30 days in advance of the event start date. If you cancel your registration, three options are available: Your registration may be carried forward for you to attend a future event Your registration fees may be refunded (less a $250.00 administration fee) Your registration may be transferred to a colleague within your organization at any time After the 30 day deadline, there will be no refunds or carry-forwards. No-shows forfeit the full registration fee.
